Alef's mission is to showcase a progressive vision of the Middle East and to spotlight the cultural contribution of people of Middle East origin.

As the "chic sheikh" justified opting for a life in fashion over politics to a reporter when the magazine was being launched last year:

"I am doing more for the exposure of my country than my cousins who are in politics," he says. "I want to change people's views of the Middle East and I could not do that if I was in politics."

Or as he told another reporter:

"I want the magazine to be an ambassador from the Middle East, something that reflects the beauty of the region and shows that it's not only about Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and terrorism."

Yes, indeed. Let's see, one down, two to go, and then we can all focus on the really important things in life.
