Petraeus to be named military commander in Iraq

The New York Times reports that President Bush will name Petraeus as the head military commander in Iraq, a choice recommended earlier today by Dan Senor and Roman Martinez in a WSJ opinion piece.

To get an idea of what this will mean for U.S. strategy in Iraq, the Times reports that Petraeus posted a sign in his Mosul headquarters that read “We are in a race to win over the people. What have you and your element done today to contribute to victory?”

General Petraeus is described by one of his former colleagues as an “imaginative commander who is experienced and knows how to deal with irregular warfare,” the term the military uses to refer to insurgencies.
