An Islamicist at Brandeis doesn't think bin Laden had anything to do with 9/11

"I do not find any evidence that would make me agree that Osama bin Laden was behind the attack on the Twin Towers," Dr. Natana DeLong-Bas, lecturer in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University, reportedly told an Arabic newspaper.

DeLong-Bas is the author of Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad (Oxford University Press, 2004). Her book has been highly recommended by the Saudi embassy in Washington, D.C. She has also contributed to several books on Islam.

According to DeLong-Bas, Wahhabi Islam is incorrectly perceived. "Ibn al-Wahhab [the founder of Wahhabi Islam] was not the godfather of contemporary terrorist movements," rather, in her view, he was "a voice of reform" who promoted a "vision of Islamic society" which said that "Muslims, Christians, and Jews were to enjoy peaceful co-existence and cooperative commercial treaty relations."

We can only hope that terrorists who use Wahhab's opinions to justify their massacres of civilians will read DeLong-Bas's book. And given that the Saudis are said to be vigorously promoting her book, surely Christians and Jews will soon be able to practice their religion in public in Saudi Arabia since now we are all assured that this is what the real message of Wahhabi Islam is supposed to be.
